Jimmy Burns

Live At B.L.U.E.S.

By Bigdaddy

At 64 years old Jimmy Burns looks like a kindly

retired type. Kindly he may be but he is far from

retired. In his vocals there might be the slightest hint

of the years he has spent onstage. With his guitar

playing the experience has made him a true

technician but he doesn’t play flawlessly like BB or

Buddy but rather like Guitar Shorty or Luther Allison.

That is to say that “Live” is just that-a live wire. I was

pleasantly surprised to say the least. I played this

CD four times the first day and became an instant

Jimmy Burns fan. I will be looking into his other

records for sure.

Recorded at the famous North side Chicago club

B.L.U.E.S. adds a touch of genuine class to the

effort. The Jimmy Burns band is in high demand and

here they showcase such diverse sounds as Chicago

and Delta Blues, Soul & R&B. This CD includes 12

great songs-6 originals of which “Leaving Here

Walking” is the first (and my favorite). Burns’ inspired

and energetic playing will turn heads. Put this CD on

your stereo at home and tell me you can resist the

temptation to snap your fingers and tap your feet.

The band itself has quite the pedigree and includes

Anthony “Fret burner” Palmer (Otis Rush) on rhythm

and lead guitar, Greg “E.G.” McDaniel (son of

guitarist Floyd McDaniel and Bessie Jackson & Bo

Diddley’s cousin) on bass and James Carter (Willie

Kent’s nephew) on drums. Special guest vocalist

Jesse Fortune does an impressive job on BB Kings’

“3 O’Clock Blues”. The entire CD is a keeper and a

true highlight of this past year. Three words- “Thank

you Delmark”!

Each month, one lucky member of the Walla Walla

Blues Society will receive a prize from our prize bin

(WWBS merchandise, festival/concert tickets, CD’s,

prizes donated by local sponsors, etc). We will also

pull a name each month from the list of new and

renewing members. This might be a good time to join

the WWBS if you still haven’t done so, or to renew

your membership if you’ve let it lapse, because you

can’t win if you’re not a member!

This month’s Blues Lottery winners are …
